IoT Sensor Gateways and Protocol Converters

MachineSens IoT gateways carry data from wireless sensors to the BuildOT One cloud platform. The range includes indoor and outdoor LoRaWAN gateways, an NRF gateway and a Bluetooth LE gateway. Three converters bring wired Modbus RS485 and BACnet equipment online over LoRaWAN, 4G LTE or MQTT for UAE and GCC buildings.

Most projects use one or two gateway types. LoRaWAN gateways serve most MachineSens sensors and meters, and they cover large floor areas with few units. Converters are added only where wired equipment already exists. Every gateway and converter sends its data to BuildOT One, where it sits next to readings from every other device.

Products in this range

  • Edge Lite Indoor LoRaWAN Gateway. A compact indoor LoRaWAN gateway with a built-in network server. It suits fast rollouts inside one building.
  • Edge Pro. An industrial outdoor LoRaWAN gateway with up to 16 channels. Use it where one gateway must cover a large area.
  • Edge Connect Wireless IoT NRF Gateway. A compact NRF gateway for up to 125 devices. It publishes data as JSON over MQTT.
  • Edge BLE Gateway. A Bluetooth gateway for BLE sensors and tags. It is PoE capable and updates over the air.
  • Convert+ Modbus RS485 to LoRaWAN converter. A small converter that lets Modbus devices talk over LoRaWAN. It is a common partner for Energy Eye meters.
  • ConvertIQ LTE. A Modbus to cellular gateway. Data travels both ways, so you can read values and send commands.
  • Pulse Convert+. A BACnet to MQTT protocol converter on a fanless industrial PC. It links BACnet HVAC, lighting and energy systems to MQTT platforms.

How to choose

  • Match the radio to the sensors.LoRaWAN sensors need an Edge Lite or Edge Pro. NRF devices need Edge Connect. Bluetooth tags need the Edge BLE Gateway.
  • Pick indoor or outdoor.Edge Lite covers indoor floors. Edge Pro covers rooftops, campuses and open sites.
  • Bring wired kit online.Use Convert+ to put Modbus meters on LoRaWAN, ConvertIQ LTE where there is no network, and Pulse Convert+ to read an existing BACnet BMS.
  • Check the backhaul.Decide whether the gateway will use Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a SIM before installation.
  • Ask for a coverage survey.Walls, shafts and basements affect range, so a short survey sets the right number of gateways.

Works with BuildOT One

Gateway data flows into the Data Integration layer, which links BuildOT One with other building systems. AirBMS uses it for wireless building management, and Energy and Utilities uses it for metering. Because every gateway lands in the same platform, you can add new sensor types later without a second system. For the wider approach, see Building Performance Management.

Where they are used

MachineSens IoT gateways run in offices, hotels, schools, universities and residential communities across the UAE and GCC. LoRaWAN gateways carry IAQ data across HCT campuses. An NRF gateway links ThermoSense thermostats at a private school in Dubai. Wireless metering at a beachfront hotel in Ajman cost about 30% less than an RS485 retrofit. Frequently asked questions

What does an IoT sensor gateway do?
It receives data from wireless sensors and forwards it to a cloud or local server, usually over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular. MachineSens gateways publish the data over MQTT to BuildOT One.
What is the difference between a gateway and a converter?
A gateway collects radio traffic from many sensors. A converter connects one wired device, such as a Modbus meter or BACnet system, to a wireless or cloud network.
Which LoRaWAN band do MachineSens gateways use?
MachineSens deploys LoRaWAN on the EU868 band in the UAE. The Convert+ converter also runs on EU868, in LoRaWAN Class C.
Can I connect an existing BACnet BMS?
Yes. Pulse Convert+ reads BACnet IP data and publishes it over MQTT with TLS v1.2.
